How to calculate Maternity Payments.

Modified on Tue, 20 Jan at 1:21 PM

Maternity schedules are based on the contract setup within each school and can be found in Edupay by clicking the Mat/school name at the top of the page --> Contract admin.

Both contracts will be made up of OMP and SMP.

A typical schedule follows a similar pattern:

Weeks 1 - 6: Higher Rate = 90% of AWE

Weeks 7 - 39: Standard Rate = £187.18 or 90% of AWE (which ever is lower)

(Note: OMP will top up the SMP to the full contracted earnings, this varies based on teaching or support roles and the contract setup in your school.)

SMP = Calculated based on Average weekly earnings (15 weeks back from baby due date, then the 8 weeks before that is used to calculate AWE)

e.g. Baby due date = 10/04/2025 - 15 weeks (qualifying week: 22/12/2024 - 28/12/2024)

Qualifying week - 8 week relevant period = 21/12/2024 to 27/10/2024

Week 1: £500        Week 5: £500

Week 2: £650        Week 6: £650

Week 3: £650        Week 7: £500

Week 4: £650        Week 8: £500

Total 8 weeks of Relevant period = £4,600 / 8 = £575 AWE

If paid monthly you would add the two pay periods / 2 x 12 / 52.143.

(Note: Week 7 onwards SMP is paid at £187.18 or 90% of AWE (whichever is lower)

OMP = Calculated based on contractual earnings

Annual salary= £40,000 / 52.143 = £767.12 Contractual Earnings used for OMP.

e.g. in the Edupay "pay" column of the Maternity calendar refers to 100% of the contractual earnings.
